Card Grading
Card Grading: Everything You Need to Know
Whether you're a seasoned collector or just pulled your first rare card, grading can be one of the smartest moves you make for your collection. Here's what you need to know — and how to get started. We are proud to partner with Premier Card Grading. Use referral link RAZOR10 which offers you a 10% discount off standard and express service tiers.
Why Grading Matters
A professionally graded card isn't just a card in a case — it's a verified, authenticated collectible with a standardized condition score. Grading matters because:
- It protects your investment. Graded cards are sealed in tamper-evident slabs that prevent damage and preserve condition.
- It could increase value. A 10 or 9.5 can be worth multiples of the same card ungraded.
- It builds buyer trust. Graded cards could sell faster and at higher prices because the condition is verified by a third party.
- It's the collector standard. The most sought-after cards in the hobby are graded — period.
When Is It Worth Grading a Card?
Not every card needs to be graded, but here are the situations where it makes sense:
- The card has significant raw value ($50+) and appears to be in near-mint or mint condition
- You pulled a chase card, alt art, or secret rare from a sealed product
- You own a vintage card (Base Set, 1st Edition, Shadowless) in strong condition
- You want to sell and need to maximize your return
- You're building a long-term collection and want to preserve key pieces
Rule of thumb: if the grading fee is less than 20–30% of the card's potential graded value, it's usually worth it.
